In "Morning Glory," Rick Rush captures the tranquility of an early morning round of golf and expresses his thoughts of how things should be through this work. Impressionism may describe a style of art, but in "Morning Glory," Rush takes that term to a new meaning. Rick Rush is committed to depicting a style of life that embraces all of what America stands for as a civilized nation that cares about people and goes about daily life attempting to always do the right thing.
Morning Glory does that like no other work Rush has done nor has any other artist captured. Buried in a simple pose of four golfers beginning a round early in the morning are the subtleties of optimism, gentility, appreciation for nature and freedom. All of these issues unfold in different ways that allow the viewer to form his own impressions of what Rick Rush was capturing. The optimism can be as simple as the golfers normal optimism before starting a round but the optimism can be carried much further as to the future. Gentility is a basic tenet of why people play golf but in this increasing hostile society, and with attitudes in sports changing. Rush tried to tell the viewer that we are to watch sports to enjoy the thrill and competition not to take out our hostilities.
Simply appreciating nature is not enough. As the golfers enjoy the great outdoors, they are reminded that with appreciation comes responsibility. Rush believes that we must be stewards of our universe and use but not abuse our gifts. And lastly freedom as a golfer is teeing off and taking full advantage of the freedoms that this nation provides for us. Even as they are teeing off, fellow countrymen are defending that right. In this work Rush allures the viewer to enjoy the scene and if he wants, ponder the deeper thought. Exactly what a great work of art must do.
