The 2017 University of Alabama Football season was one for the history books. The season was exciting, and winning the College Football Playoff National Championship was the crowning achievement for Coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. America’s Sports Artist, Rick Rush, has captured this exhilarating championship victory in his painting and editions of prints entitled, Crimson Comeback. This new image captures Alabama’s thrilling win in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game against Coach Kirby Smart’s University of Georgia Bulldogs by the score of 26 to 23 in overtime. Rush has been fortunate enough to capture in paintings and prints all of Coach Saban’s National Championships at the Capstone. We call this group of Saban Championship Prints, our Crimson Collection. Crimson Comeback is our newest addition to this exclusive collection, and possibly the most historic piece to date.
In the first overtime championship game in BCS and CFPNC history, Alabama rose to the throne as College Football National Champions for the 17th time overall and the 5th time in the last 9 years during Saban’s era at the Capstone. With this win, Coach Saban tied Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant as the winningest coaches of National Championships in modern college football with each having 6. It is both remarkable and historic that Saban and Bryant reached this elite title while coaching at The University of Alabama.
Crimson Comeback was a game we will never forget as Alabama fans. This historic overtime win was the unbelievable result of Coach Saban’s halftime coaching decision. His halftime adjustments included substituting starting quarterback Jalen Hurts with freshman QB, Tua Tagovailoa. Hurts had started for two years and led Alabama to back-to-back national championship games, while Tua had no college starts. This was not a substitution you would normally make. Rush’s paintings and prints feature what he thinks is the big story behind this championship: Saban’s Decision, Alabama’s outstanding defense and Tua being powerfully protected by the Tide offensive line as he launches his touchdown throw to wide open Devonte Smith for the crushing TD and the National Championship. Additionally, in the mid-ground you see the stellar Alabama defense and Coach Saban’s elation as the road to 17 National Championships was completed for the Crimson Tide in this historic, Crimson Comeback.
